Midkine (MK) is a member of a family of neurotrophic and developmentally-regulated heparin-binding molecules that currently consists of midkine, pleiotrophin/PTN and avian RI-HB. Across species, MK shows 87% amino acid identity between the human and mouse proteins. Between family members, human MK is approximately 50% identical to human PTN. Midkine is involved can be categorized into five areas: (1) cancer, (2) inflammation/immunity, (3) blood pressure, (4) development, and (5) tissue protection. The gene of midkine is frequently up-regulated in many human cancer.
